“Gurbet artik bir ev / Gurbet is a home now” (2021) is a documentary film by the artist Pınar Öğrenci and deals with the urban renewal policy in the 1980s in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg and its effects on the migrants living there.
For this, the artist Pınar Öğrenci mainly uses archive footage, weaves it with contemporary and present-day stories and brings them to life through the use of poetry and music. The perspectives of women and their overlapping experiences in the areas of home, street and work come to the forefront of the narrative. By not only reflecting but also re-contextualizing the emotional complexities inherent in the history of migration from Turkey to Germany, the film is committed to decolonizing historical representations of migration and to a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the lived experiences of migrants from Turkey.
The DAZ is therefore showing “Gurbet artik bir ev / Gurbet is a home now” as part of the exhibition “Dessauer Straße and other stories of emancipatory housing”. Following the film screening, Pınar Öğrenci and Niloufar Tajeri will discuss the role of migration history against the background of neighborhood and housing experiences from the 1980s to the present day.
The film screening and discussion will be held in English.
