The exhibition THE DEMOLITION QUESTION & POWER TO RENOVATION approaches the all-too-present phenomenon of demolition and its consequences from different perspectives.

THE DEMOLITION QUESTION, an exhibition and publication project, presents 100 buildings of accomplished or pending demolition status located in Berlin, Kassel, Munich, and the state of Brandenburg. Based on research work of several universities, these demolition stories exemplify the ecological, political, socio-economic, and cultural consequences of a practice rooted in a fossilised modern society. The exhibition further features present-day anti-demolition initiatives while declaring the demolition question as one of the key issues of our time, alongside the housing and land question.

Through demolition, not only large amounts of energy, emissions, and the resources used in the buildings are eliminated, but also a large amount of affordable housing. POWER TO RENOVATION, a film project by the EU-wide initiative HouseEurope!, spotlights this practice as part of real estate speculation. In favour of more socially sustainable building practices, it calls for renovation and modernisation to be prioritised over demolition and replacement building. Feel invited to vote for the EU citizens’ initiative in the booth at the DAZ.
